Hegang is located in far north east Heilongjiang province, about as far north-east as one can go in China. It is home to a wonderful mine railway that was split half steam (using SY 2-8-2's) and half electric (German built LEW's - known as the EL2 class and the larger and somewhat less successful domestic built EL1 class) on the mining railway and the usual diesels on the China Rail mainline to Jiamusi. Steam photography is very limited in this area due to obstructions and opposing sunlight (if any) and one had to mix a large amount of creativity as well as a large amount of luck to come away with anything remotely satisfactory! The electric locomotives did however provide an interesting alternative!
