Model Review - 1st & 2nd Production Run

General
The long awaited GQ70 tank cars were released in March 2008. The prototypes, while still young on China Rail, still look almost the same as the very common G60's and thus are still very popular with modellers. With the first run there was only one black car (CF00709) out of ten was also disappointing, and these sold out within hours from most retailers and are now very rare (not to mention expensive) if you are lucky enough to find one. A few years later when the second run was released, 2 more black variants with more lettering detail appeared. These two sold out relatively quickly.

Details
They have beautiful physical details, particularly the piping 'network' under the tank and above the bogies, ladders, grab irons and fine scale air hoses. The bogies are fast type K (Kuai) bogies with 3 springs each and are well reproduced. Lettering is very sharp, and the color bands have no fuzz. The silver cars however are radioactively glossy.

Performance
The cars have a nice weight and roll very freely. The deep wheel flanges don't like Peco code 83 turnouts, but I think we're all getting pretty used to these shenanigans.

Coupler Conversion
Bachmann EZ mates can be replaced with Kadee #56 or #156 (long shanks - medium shank don't provide enough clearance to operate properly).

Other Notes
Beautifully made freight cars that most Chinese modellers will find a use for.

Review Summary

The Good News

The Bad News
Hugely popular model Deep wheel flanges
Extremely well made Silver cars are extraordinarily glossy
Crisp lettering and good variety of regions/refineries Only one black car (partially solved with the second production)

Model Review - 3rd Production Run

General
The third run of tank cars gave us the GN70 tank cars with four numbers. Thankfully all of these cars were black (there are enough silver ones around!). The cars were introduced in the new style packaging - basically the same design as the earlier releases, but with a significant change in the box graphics. These cars also come with some paperwork, a cut down diagram of parts, a new trend for freight cars it would seem.

Details
The models are just as nicely made as the previous tank cars. The lettering is very crisp. They have some extra details on the undercarriage which are suprisingly more fragile than the rest.

Performance
As per 1st & 2nd production run interview.

Coupler Conversion
As per 1st & 2nd production run interview.
